1.Assess the competitiveness* – you, specialty and program 2.Do not try to guess where the program will rank you 3.Consider the program characteristics, geography, etc. 4.Make your ROL long enough – 12-15 programs, or more 5.Some “reach” programs 6.Include “safety” programs * Refer to Match Data in the NRMP or CiM: http://www.nrmp.org/match-data/ https://www.aamc.org/cim/residency/thematch/ Strategies:
10
How the Match Algorithm Works 1.Starts with an attempt to place an applicant in the program ranked #1 by the applicant 2.A tentative Match occurs: if the program also ranked the applicant and the program has unfilled positions if the program is filled but the applicant is ranked higher than another applicant tentatively matched to that program
11
How the Match Algorithm Works 1.There is no match if: the program did not rank the applicant. the program ranked the applicant but is filled with other applicants more preferred by the program, 2.Matches are final when: the algorithm completes its cycles, all tentative matches become final. 3. Couples match when: the algorithm places a couple in their highest ranked pair of programs on the PRIMARY list where BOTH matched.
12
And if you don’t… Individualized plan – come to OSA to discuss in detail Extending medical school (delaying graduation until 2016) is not a strategy that is beneficial for all unmatched students
13
Summary Discuss your list with Deans and faculty advisors Prepare a ROL worksheet before entering the NRMP Match Site Be sure to certify your Rank Order List Complete your ROL at least a week before the deadline: Feb. 25, 2015, 9:00 p.m., E.S.T. Do not make last minute changes
14
Match Rules, Violations, & Consequences
20
Violation Investigations Reports of potential MATCH violations are taken seriously and investigated fully Violation policy is at www.nrmp.orgwww.nrmp.org
21
Violation by an Applicant Final Report sent to: – Applicant’s medical school – Directors of residency programs – American Board of Medical Specialties – Federation of State Medical Boards (if applicant is to be permanently barred) – Interested parties Applicant may be identified as a match violator in R3 System or barred from future matches for one to three years, or permanently.
22
Couples Match Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP)
23
Couples Information Any two applicants can couple. A $15 per partner couples fee must be paid. 30 unique programs can be ranked by each partner before extra rank fees apply. Each partner enters his/her own list. Lists MUST have equal number of ranks. Applicants participating as a couple can rank the same program more than once.
24
Couples Information Applicants decide what constitutes an acceptable pair of programs. NRMP does not check this information. Use special code (999999999) to indicate when one partner is willing to go unmatched if the other partner matches. Code should be used at bottom of lists when other acceptable program pairs have been exhausted. Couples are matched on PRIMARY list only – supplemental rank order lists are NOT linked.
