Roaring Twenties! Party Time!

Meowing 20’s…  Western societies begin to fall in the late 20’s (1928 and 1929)  Too much money is being thrown around  Remember, the “Big 3” after WWI were:  USA  France  Britain  Who was left out?  Russia!!!!

More Problems  Overproduction – Occurs when a country produces too many goods to use or consume.  Overproduction and the other previously mentioned factors are going to lead to a worldwide economic “downturn” in the late 1920’s

Question  What was the name of the organization that was made to solve disputes between countries? 40 different nations…  The League of Nations

League of Nations  The League of Nations was unjust and did not stop other countries from invading or fighting each other.

The Crash  Overproduction of goods and falling demand then led to an economic crash and a World Wide Great Depression in the fall of 1929.  The Depression – an era characterized by extreme poverty and economic recession.

Dictators  All of these problems led to the rise of dictators.  People in many countries were searching for any little shred of hope that they could grasp on to.  Many of these dictators provided that hope.  Dictator – A ruler with total power over a country. Usually, that power is obtained through force.

The “3” Dictators  All of these dictators had the goal of achieving a Total State. This is called Totalitarianism.  Totalitarianism – When all aspects of life are controlled by the dictator and his party.

Dictators  After WWI, Italy, Russia, and Germany were all struggling with both political and economic crisis.  Each of these countries is taken over by a dictator.

Benito Mussolini  Italy  Had the support of the working class  1922 – March on Rome – He is named Prime Minister  He took power through force  Achieved Totalitarianism by creating a “police state”  Overthrows the government and becomes the first “Fascist” dictator.  Fascism – an extremely authoritarian form of government. Places almost no emphasis on human rights.  Authoritarian – enforcing strict obedience and loyalty

Joseph Stalin  Russia  Had support of the working class  Wanted a Total State  Not Fascist  Made it so that all land and production was owned by the state = Socialism.  He participated in the oppression of the common people and purging (cleansing) the opposition through murder.

Adolf Hitler  Germany  Born in Austria (He is part Jewish…)  Fought for Germany in WWI  Anti-Semitic – Hates the Jewish people  Wrote “Mein Kampf” (my struggle) while in prison in the 1920’s to lay out his political and racial goals for a future Germany  Builds off of Nationalist Ideals  Built the Nazi party on the economic anger of citizens
