Back to Basics is the 4-weeks review course to help with preparation for the MCCQE part 1 examination.

2. Use the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) objectives as your study guide
Your best resource (study guide) is the list of objectives available on the MCC website. If you haven’t done so already, familiarize yourself with the resources available on the MCC website.

3. Resources See the list of recommended references
(The uOttawa Faculty of Medicine advises you not to rely solely on the Toronto Notes or similar student texts)
The MCC has a list of resources they use as reference for answers to examination questions. The list is available on the MCC website.

4. Back to Basics MCCQE part 1 is divided into: PHLEO Population health
(C2LEO Consideration of the legal, ethical and organizational aspects of medicine are included)
Medicine
Obstetrics and gynecology
Pediatrics
Psychiatry
Surgery
Family medicine (a subscore given)
Problem solving and clinical reasoning
Total Score

5. Back to Basics Assessment of basic competency
There is a predetermined cut score ~390
A candidate could do poorly in one discipline and well in another and pass
To pass the exam the candidate must meet or exceed the predetermined cut score.

6. Back to Basics Do MCC practice exam on their website
Do the SAEE (self administered evaluating examination)
These exams may not be as difficult but are useful for practice and to guide where to focus your studying
Take advantage of all of the MCC resources, practice examinations and demos available.

MCC practice exams may not be as difficult as MCCQE part 1
Use the practice examinations as a needs assessment as well as to prepare for the MCC style of online examinations. The instant feedback will guide you as to where you need to focus your studies.

8. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
DSM-5 terminology will be used and DSM-IV-TR will be written in brackets.
For answers to MCCQE Part I clinical decision-making write-in questions, candidates will continue to receive full marks for correct answers regardless of whether they use DSM-5 or DSM-IV-TR language.

Most objectives have been covered during your training to date including in lectures, CBLs and clinical rotations

Medical students have learned the vast majority of the content during the past 4 years. Use your past notes and uOttawa resources to help with your review and preparation.

2 mandatory sessions - with some new and very important material
Bioethics & the Law and Financial, Transition of Residency

This year Dr. Eva Tsai from the CMPA will be presenting the session known as bioethics and the law, this is the only component of Back to Basics which is considered mandatory and may include some new content.
