www.southwark.gov.uk Foundation Stage Headlines 66% of Southwark school children achieved a Good Level of Development (GLD). An improvement of 6 percentage points from the previous year (60% in 2013) The LA’s performance continued to be higher than the national (60%), London (62%) and statistical neighbour averages (63%) We were ranked joint 16th (no change from last year) and also remained positioned in the top quartile for this measure

There was a 5 percentage points increase from 72% in 2013 to 77% in 2014 For the second consecutive year, Southwark’s result was better than the national average (74% in 2014) Southwark was ranked joint 30th – an improvement of 2 places We remain positioned in the top quartile

Compared against London averages, Southwark’s results were in line with those for 2 levels progress in reading. www.southwark.gov.uk HMCI Annual Report 2014 Headlines Ofsted is warning that too many secondary schools in England are not making sufficient progress, with almost a third judged not to be good enough. He says there are now 170,000 pupils in inadequate secondary schools, about 70,000 more than two years ago. Sir Michael says these schools "need to concentrate on the basics".

They are failing because they haven't got the essentials right - governance and oversight is weak, leadership is poor, misbehaviour goes unchallenged and teaching is indifferent.”

www.southwark.gov.uk HMCI Annual Report 2014 Why are primaries improving? The quality of leadership has improved. Governing bodies provide headteachers with challenge as well as support. Teaching is focused on getting the basics right, including phonics. Good attendance and behaviour are the norm. More of the brightest pupils are reaching their potential by the age of 11. The gap between those on free school meals and other pupils has narrowed.
