1. Bellwork  What is a dystopia? If you can, define dystopia in your own words and give any examples you can think of (movies, books, plays, ect).

2. Directions  I am going to show you two quotes from the book Anthem by Ayn Rand.  I want you to read the quote and analyze what the meaning of the quote. Pick the best possible answer and explain your thinking.

3. Analyze  “IT IS A SIN TO WRITE THIS. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see.” a. This person is committing a crime. b. This person lives in a place where it is a crime to write. c. This person knows it is a crime to have their own opinion yet dare to do so anyway. They keep these ideas written on a secret paper, yet another crime. d. This person is not scared to commit any crime.

4. Analyze  “We are alone here under the earth. It is a fearful word, alone. The laws say that none among men may be alone, ever and at any time, for this is the great transgression and the root of all evil.” a. Being alone is bad. b. Being alone is the greatest crime one could commit. This person is scared to be alone yet is risking their life to do so. c. This person is hiding under the earth. d. This person is scared of being alone.

5. Dystopia defined  An imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

6. Characteristics of a dystopian society  Propaganda is used to control the citizens.  Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.  A figurehead or concept is worshiped by the citizens.  Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.  Citizens fear the outside world.  Citizens live in a dehumanized state.  Citizens conform to uniform expectations.

7. Examples of dystopias In The Hunger Games is a perfect example of a dystopian society. The government is a dictatorship where President Snow controls the entire country of Panem. Each district’s food, freedom, income, and quality of living is controlled by the government. The government forces two children from each district to fight for their lives in the arena. They do this to remind the citizens of Panem that the are completely powerless.

Examples of dystopias Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey who is rescued from a life-and- death situation by a masked vigilante known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government- controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

9. Examples of dystopias Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London, in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. Currently, the Party is forcing the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. Such thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes.
