Thesis Statement Throw Down!

P.S.A.: Thesis Statement Review A Thesis Statement is: A writer’s main idea. The answer to the question embedded in the prompt. The last sentence in the introductory paragraph. A contract with the audience- what you’re committing to write about. The sentence that answers your reader’s biggest question: What on Earth is your point?!

P.S.A.: Thesis Statement Review A thesis statement is comprised of THREE parts: Topic: What is the paper about? Position: Where does the writer stand? Rationale: Why is the writer’s point valid? T opic P osition R ationale = Thesis

Thesis: Step by Step 1. Find the topic: The topic is the subject that you are writing about. 2. Take a position: The position is your opinion about the subject you are writing about. What do you think about the topic? 3. Establish your rationale: The rationale is your reason or justification for holding that position or opinion. Why is the position true? Remember! For now, stick with the RULE OF THREE. (Three pieces of evidence to support your position. )

Directions: 1.View the writing prompt on the screen. 2.You will write your own thesis statement about the featured prompt- no talking during these 2ish minutes. 3.When done, the group will share each thesis statement and choose the best one out of the group. 4.Groups will be allowed to improve their chosen thesis statement before writing it on the board. 5.Two groups will be chosen at random to place their statements on the board.

Writing Prompt #1 Superheroes have become a dominant force for the movie industry, with representations of Superman, the Avengers, Batman, and Captain America. With so many to choose from, which is the best and why?

Writing Prompt #2 Superheroes have it pretty good. They can be lonely and misunderstood, however their compensation isn’t anything to complain about. They can control the weather, fly, or shoot swords out of their fingers. If you could have any power, what would you choose, and why?

Writing Prompt #3 Over the years several popular children's books have been banned in the United States for a variety of reasons. Many of them are considered classics, such as Charlotte's Web, Winnie-the- Pooh, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Green Eggs and Ham, and Where The Wild Things Are. Identify the topic here and take a position. Create a thesis statement that supports it.

Writing Prompt #4 The setting of a novel is where the action takes place. Explain how the setting complements the story in a novel of your choosing (try to have it be one many people have read, so something from school from middle school maybe?).

Writing Prompt #5 Romeo & Juliet: Let’s work on your paper’s thesis statement!
