Defining Satire O Satire: A tool writers use to critique or point out a flaw in society, an organization, or an individual. O Satire adds a comedic or absurd element while pretending to take itself seriously. O It is not simply making fun of something; rather, it helps us think about familiar things in a new way, while making fun of something is usually destructive rather than helpful.

Satirical Devices Exaggeration : Representing something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. Absurdity (Incongruity) : To present things that are incongruous or are ridiculous to the surroundings. Reversal : The opposite of the normal order Parody : Imitate the techniques and/or style of another person, place, or thing.

Satire in Shrek Satirical Devices Satirical Devices in Shrek O Exaggeration O Absurdity O Reversal O Parody O Princess Fiona defeats Robin Hood and his Merry Men without any help or weapons. O Princess Fiona uses her ponytail to deliver a knockout punch to one of the Merry Men. O The roles of the hero and the damsel in distress have been reversed. Fiona does not want to be rescued. O The fight scene is an exaggerated imitation of the martial arts style and special effects, alluding to movies such as The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Satire in Shrek O What was the scene, and Shrek in general, critiquing? Typical fairytales. Hollywood O In what ways does it make us think about familiar things in a new way? Damsel in distress…NO! Contrary to popular fairytales, the princess does not need rescuing by a handsome man. The role of man and woman has been changed.

O The traditional story of the knight rescuing the damsel-in-distress is not a realistic depiction of the roles filled by men and women in modern society. O Current Hollywood action movies like The Matrix have become ridiculous because they are too focused on special effects. Satire in Shrek cont.
