World Geography 3202 5.6 Patterns in Tertiary and Quaternary Industries
2
Factors that affect the location of a tertiary activity. There are three factors that determine the demand for tertiary activities: 1. The price: They need to be located in areas where people can afford to pay for them. 1. The price: They need to be located in areas where people can afford to pay for them. 2. Location: The greater the distance between the service and the people who wish to obtain the service the more expensive the service becomes. This is why services locate near their target market Tertiary activities will locate where there is a demand for them. 3. Population: Service industries only locate where there is a population that can sustain them. The larger the population the more services become available.

Factors that affect the location of a quaternary activity 3. Education High-tech quaternary industry work requires people with high education levels. 3. Issues That Affect the Viability of a Tertiary Activity There has to be enough demand for a service or product for a producer to make a profit. The demand for a product depends on two factors: the price and the location of the service. The further away a service location is from a customer, the costlier will be the service in terms of both time and money spent travelling.
5
Factors that account for patterns in world trade. commodity is a marketable item produced to satisfy wants or needs Tourism is a major world commodity and one of the fastest growing and most profitable sectors of many economies around the world. Countries that do not have many resources, or the means to create industry can use their physical and cultural attributes to attract tourists. From a country's perspective, international tourism is new money coming to the country. It functions just as exporting would. Ex: Tourism

5. Advertising has been effective using attractive & exotic pictures. Tourism has increased for 6 reasons 2. People have increased leisure time due to available technologies. 4. Retired people have secure incomes and are able to travel. 3. People have increased discretionary spending money. 1. Travel has become easier and less expensive. 6. Travel agencies have packaged attractive "all expenses paid“ trips.
7
Travel agents see that people are usually looking for one of three different kinds of vacations: 1. Climate oriented (skiing & sun bathing are at opposite extremes but both rely on climate). 2. Landscape oriented (some people like to view the sites). 3. Culture oriented (cultural land marks are of interest to people ex. Athens).

Factors that account for patterns in mass communications. Education: Mass communication is linked to high-tech work, quaternary sector employment. To have these types of employment there needs to be educated people. Education: Mass communication is linked to high-tech work, quaternary sector employment. Population: For mass communication to be necessary there needs to be concentrated populations who need to communicate over vast distances. The concentration of people creates the workforce, and the market. Towers, poles, cables, networks, buildings. Mass Communication: The delivery of a message to a large number of people
11
In global communications there are areas of activity and there are areas where there is no activity because of a lack of development and no connectivity. * The more development – the more connectivity.
12
Mass communications can and the location of a workplace. However, we may lose high-tech jobs to other countries – educated people but cheap labour. Businesses do not need to be located physically near other businesses as we saw with the agglomerating tendency of the manufacturing sector. If Infrastructure improves to the point where it overcomes distances, information technology will be a new source of employment in rural regions. (Call Centers and people working online from home.)
13
Factors That Impact The Development In The Quaternary Sector 1.Development in mass communications: Research and information sharing is driven and improved when mass communication systems are improved. A population of people concentrated in an area makes the information sector viable. Thing about the areas that can avail of digital cell phone service, high speed internet connection. Historically, information technology like cable TV, telephones, and radio flourished in areas where there was a population large enough to support them. 2. Industrialization: Countries that are highly industrialized and have well developed economies tend to have much higher standards of living and have the capital resources to invest in research and development. Infrastructure is required for the communication of information. The infrastructure has been closely linked to populated areas. Interestingly enough the development of infrastructure is changing so much and decreasing in price to the point that it may change the patterns of infrastructure. Lesser developed nations currently do not have much access. However, lesser developed nations are not tied to the old and outdated infrastructure. This might be the time for lesser developed nations to build infrastructure and increase their share of the information technology market.
