Do Now… Read the ballad. What do you notice about the structure or organization of this poem? Continue to think about how close reading clues are important throughout class, gathering new ideas & details. Prepare to discuss & defend ideas and questions in Closing Starbucks with TBE and logical reasoning. It’s of a famous highwayman a story I will tell; His name was Willy Brennan, in Ireland he did dwell; And on the Kilworth mountains he commenced his wild career, Where many a wealthy gentleman before him shook with fear. Brennan on the Moor, Bold and undaunted stood young Brennan on the Moor… One day, on the highway, as Willy he sat down, He met the Mayor of Cashel a mile outside the town; The Mayor, he knew his features---”I think, young man,” said he, “Your name is Willy Brennan---you must come along with me.” Brennan on the Moor, Bold and undaunted stood young Brennan on the Moor… Which of the following best describes the poem’s organization? MODEL…Watch how I analyze text structure to help me think about the ideas, themes, or messages in the poem. I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen, Of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been; Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were, With morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair. I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be When winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see. For still there are so many things that I have never seen; In every wood in every spring there is a different green. I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago, And people who will see a world that I shall never know. But all the while I sit and think of times there were before, I listen for returning feet and voices at the door. How does the idea of time contribute to the poem’s structure? A. The speaker thinks about the past and then the future, and at the end he returns to the present B. The speaker first thinks about what will happen in the future, wonders about the present, and then the past C. The speaker thinks about the present autumn, then wonders what winter without spring would be like D. The speaker recalls sitting by the fire during his youth, and remembers the sound of feet and voices I think about the voice…first- person; third- person… I think if the voice is positive or negative about the subject or both… I think about if certain sentences or lines give clues… Which sentence in the second stanza best describes the speaker’s thought process from the start of the poem to the end?
