4  CE.C&G.1.1 Explain how the tensions over power and authority led America’s founding fathers to develop a constitutional democracy (e.g., mercantilism, salutary neglect, taxation and representation, boycott and protest, independence, American Revolution, Articles of Confederation, Ben Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, Son of Liberty, etc.).

5 Mayflower Compact This agreement was signed by Puritans sailing on the Mayflower. Led by John Winthrop, they decided to govern themselves and make laws for the good of the colony. This is the first self-government in America.

6 Examples of Colonial Self-rule First Legislature (Law making body) Jamestown, Virginia, created the first colonial legislature called the House of Burgesses. First Colonial Constitution The first colonial constitution was the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, which included a governor, a court system and an elected legislature.

7 Salutary Neglect England basically ignored America until the 1750’s, about 150 years This hands off policy was called salutary neglect. The colonists got used to acting on their own.

Ex: Social Security, Food Stamps, Medicaid/Medicare  Government should have more regulations on business Ex: Environment, Minimum wage, etc.  Social  Believe that religion should not dictate what is right.  “What happens in my home is my business” Ex: Pro Gay-Marriage, Pro-Choice.  Exception: Democrats generally think that the public is safer without guns.

31 Republicans “The Right”  Social  It’s the governments place to make sure that people are moral human beings. Ex: Anti Gay-Marriage, Pro Life  More religious  Pro guns.  Economic  The government should have less taxes and let people pay for services they want and use, not for everyone else. Ex: Use your money for your own retirement instead of Social Security.  Government should have less regulations so business prosper.
