2 The students will evaluate the problems farmers faced and their cooperative efforts to solve those problems by describing the causes and effects of the Populist party. Warm-up Question: Read “One American’s Story” on page 235 and answer these questions: 1. Who was Mary Lease 2. What problems did Lease believe the farmers had to face?

3 Deflation after the Civil War Dollar increased in value Costs of goods and services fell Question: Who is this good for? Who is this bad for? Farmers wanted the government to print money, thereby increasing the money supply and increasing the price of goods. Railroads increased the price to ship goods to market
