TELECOMMUNICATIONS APPLICATION OF THE DURATHON BATTERY EDSGN 100 Team #4 Gerek Whitman Ross Marks Ryan Capo Alvaro Oviedo

Table of Contents Overview Background Information The Customer Research Evaluating Ideas Solution Specifications Visual Representation Gains and Benefits Summary

An Overview of the Project The Need: a sustainable system to power a Telecommunications Base Station (BTS) in a no-grid or unreliable grid application. Using GE’s Durathon Sodium Metal Halide Battery.

Problems We Encountered Environmental Social Economic

Nicaragua Largest Central American country Susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions Focused on agriculture, mainly coffee and cotton Second poorest in the Western Hemisphere Unemployment is 3.8%, underemployment is 46.5% About half of Nicaragua's energy is produced by wood

The Customers GEClaro The Nicaraguan Populace

What Do We Need to Know? Technology: Sodium Metal Halide battery Base Transceiver Station AC and DC generators Lighting Heating and air conditioning Alternative energy systems The region: Climate of Nicaragua Availability of a water source Types of natural disasters The people Structural: Potential building materials Thermal systems

Brainstorming Ideas Systemic Ideas Using just a generator/battery system Using just a solar/battery system Using just a wind/battery system Using a hybrid system utilizing a generator, solar, and wind, along with the battery Criteria Reliability Cost Environmentally Friendly Durability Maintenance Space Requirement Structural Ideas Poured concrete Brick Mud Brick Wood Vinyl Aluminum Roof vents Windows Fence Criteria Durability Cost Security Heat Resistance Accessibility Ease of Construction Maintenance

The Cycle System

Specifications 18 hour cycle time: 6+6+6 Uses 1/3 less diesel fuel than just a generator/battery cycle 1kw wind turbine + 8 220w solar panels 3.3kw diesel generator Durathon G6-224S-C0-B24 Battery – 6 hour discharge at 3.3kw, 6 hour charge 1/50 horsepower fan for ventilation Up to 5 40w fluorescent bulbs for lighting

Economics

Energy Sale Opportunity There will be excess energy created by the system. Energy can be sold to villagers to provide cell phone/light charging services. 20 cents per charge – equivalent to about 4.5 Cordoba. Depending on demand, revenue could be somewhere around $100-$200 per year.

What Do the Customers Get? GE: Alternate Application for Durathon Battery Claro: Sustainable, cost-effective, and reliable system New market for cell phone service, and energy sale The Nicaraguans: Cell Phone Service Access to Energy Possible Job Opportunities

Summary Objective: Create a sustainable system to power a BTS in a no-grid application Requires low costs and maintenance Reliable and consistent power Three Customers Cycle System using Alternative Energies Alternative Energies will make the system cheaper in the long run Concrete Housing with Ventilation Excess Power sold to Nicaraguans
