Who found the first gold nugget? Gold was first discovered in South Australia. The 12 ounce nugget was dug up by J. Richard in 1846, little notice was taken at the time. In 1851 the state Government offered a reward of $1,000 for a payable gold discovery. William Chapman put his hand up for this money when he discovered gold in 1852. The next major discovery was made by Thomas Brady and Thomas Smith at Teetulpa mines in 1852. More than 20,000 South Australian men left South Australia to seek their fortunes in Victoria and New South Wales. Women and children were left behind to fend for themselves.

How to find gold the simplest way to find gold is to pan for it, in a shallow metal dish that has a wide edge to it, though any bowl can be used in a pinch. First, blacken your dish so the gold will shine against it. place your dish above a fire or in an oven and heat it until it darkens, don't let the smoke blacken it. Soot makes the gold flakes greasy and when you put water in it later the greasy flakes will float and you will lose your gold.
