Green Recovery And Reconstruction: Training Toolkit For Humanitarian Aid Project Design, Monitoring and Evaluation Session 4: Monitoring Environmental Indicators and Constraints

2 Mod 2 Ses 4 We will discuss… What to do if environmental considerations are not incorporated from the start Some tools to help you monitor environmental indicators How to overcome resistance to monitoring environmental indicators

3 Mod 2 Ses 4 What to do if…. …environmental considerations were not incorporated into the project objective and activities from the start? How can we incorporate environmental considerations at a later stage?

4 Mod 2 Ses 4 Monitoring Tools What monitoring tools and methods do you use and have found useful?

5 Mod 2 Ses 4 Tools for Monitoring Environmental Indicators  How can these tools and methods be used effectively for monitoring environmental indicators?  Environmental Stewardship Report Card – see handout 2.4.1  Environmental Indicator Framework: A monitoring system for environment-related activities in refugee operations

6 Mod 2 Ses 4 More Constraints to Monitoring Environmental Indicators  It’s too costly  It’s too time-consuming  It’s too difficult Do you agree?

7 Mod 2 Ses 4 Persuasive Communication You will have a discussion in which you will need to:  Understand the perspective, interests and underlying reasons for resistance of the person you are talking to  Present a clear argument based on 1-3 compelling points and tailor it to your audience  Support your proposal with evidence or results  Use the information you have learned today to make your case

8 Mod 2 Ses 4 Exercise: Role Plays

9 Mod 2 Ses 4 Workshop Review  What were the most useful things you learned today?  Disaster response projects impact the environment – both positively and negatively.  Disaster response projects need to be assessed and designed to ensure environmental issues are identified, negative environmental impacts are minimized and positive environmental opportunities are supported.

10 Mod 2 Ses 4 Workshop Review  Monitoring of disaster response projects needs to include indicators that identify and measure achievement or changes for specific environment-related objectives or sub- objectives.  These projects need to be evaluated to determine if the environment-related actions were appropriate and what their impact was, and to draw lessons learned for future projects.
