Systems in Manufacturing Essential Questions: What is a ‘manufacturing system’ (Identify a system). What are the components of a system? How do I identify and describe manufacturing inputs, processes, and outputs?

Manufacturing surrounds us. Think about your average day from the time you wakeup to the time you go to bed. Make a list of 25 items you use throughout a day that are manufactured. Class Discussion

A Review of the History of Manufacturing Early manufacturing was for personal use or need. Weapons, clothing, cooking, etc. Natural materials were used Usufacturing – making products for personal use Later people began making products for other people and bartering (trading) products for things they need. This began manufacturing “making products in a mechanical manner”

A Review of the History of Manufacturing As specializations in manufacturing grew, work began being done in factories, specialized buildings. This was the beginning of the industrialized society, people use machines to manufacture mass quantities of products. Today’s manufacturing involves mentafacturing, first making in the human mind.

Technological Systems System – a group of parts that operate together to achieve a goal. Technological systems include 5 elements: Inputs, processes, outputs, feedback, and goals Example FEEDBACK The bicycle speed GOAL Move the rider along

Parts of the Technological System Inputs can be grouped into seven categories: People Natural Resources (gases, liquids, or solids) Capital (tools and machines) Finance (money) Knowledge (information) Energy Time 2 major types of processes: Transformation processes – processes that changes resources (inputs) into outputs – products Management processes – assure efficient and appropriate uses of resources Outputs – can desired or undesired Desired – final product Undesired – waste, scrap, and pollution Feedback – Information used to control a system Goals – Goals should meet the needs and wants of a group

Manufacturing Inputs and Processes Inputs: All systems have the same inputs – labor, information, capital (machines and equipment), energy, materials, and finances Processes: 2 processes are used - Transformation technology – appropriate use of tools and machines to change materials into usable products Managerial technology – systems and procedures are used to make sure actions are efficient and appropriate.

Transformation Technology Step 1: find the natural resources or raw materials Step 2: resources are turned into products, this is called primary processing Examples – turning trees into lumber, plywood, particleboard, hardboard, etc; changing petroleum into fuel, lubrication, or plastic The standard sizes (lumber in 2x4’s and particleboard in 4”x8” sheets) is called standard stock. Step 3: standard stock is turned into useable products called secondary processing. Products are finished and assembled into the final product.

Managerial Technology Managerial technology plans, organizes, activates, and controls. There are 5 main areas of activity: Research and development – designs and specifications Production – manufacturing processes selected, machines and tools chosen, materials are processed into products. Marketing - movement of a product from the manufacturer to the customers Financial affairs – raising money and maintaining financial operations Industrial Relations – personnel and labor relations

Manufacturing Outputs Examples of outputs are: Desired outputs - Final product to meet needs and wants Undesired outputs – Pollution Waste – materials left from the manufacturing process

1 st & 3 rd Block: Choose a product and draw the basic manufacturing system using 11” x 17” poster/paper. Be sure to: 1. Label all parts of the model and write a brief description of each part of the system. 2. Be sure to draw pictures of your product parts in your system 3. Make it colorful and creative. Manuf.
