3 The Rise of Concerts (1) Public concerts a new phenomenon Prompted by growing middle class & emphasis on “the pursuit of happiness” Holywell Music Room, Oxford, England First hall built specially for concerts, 1748 Concerts proliferated throughout Europe in last half of the century But composers still relied on church & court patronage and the opera house for their livelihoods

4 The Rise of Concerts (2) Subscription series & benefit concerts especially popular Concerts featured orchestral, chamber, & vocal music Gave particular impetus to creation of new orchestral works Purely orchestral music moved into the public arena for the first time Haydn’s London Symphonies & many Mozart piano concertos written for public concerts
