Alert Beacon, Desktop Popup Alert, & Fire Alarm Evacuation Instructions Campus Emergency Preparedness & Planning Office 205 South Martin Jischke Drive (765) 494-0446 Ron Wright, Director Jefferson Howells, Asst Director CAMPUS EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS TRAINING SERIES

Purpose  Purdue ALERT Beacon & Desktop Popup Alert (Purdue ALERT notification layers) are activated due to a safety threat on campus.

Beacon Operation  The beacon will:  Be activated when an incident occurs on or near the Purdue WL campus that may impact one’s safety.  Alarm for 10 seconds (cannot be muted)  Flash for approximately 5 minutes  Provide incident information (Info available for 5 minutes before it resets)

Desktop Popup Alert Operation  The Popup Alert will:  Be activated when an incident occurs on or near the Purdue WL campus that may impact one’s safety.  “Take over” a Purdue logged in computer and display an alert message (most classroom & some lab computers).  By clicking the “enter” key, one can acknowledge receipt (PC) or dismiss (MAC) and return to the normal screen.

Actions  Immediately evaluate your situational awareness.  What is occurring on campus?  Am I in the threat area?  What actions should I take for my safety or those I’m responsible for?  Do I need to notify others of the incident?  Class, co-workers, others?

Actions (cont.)  Implement actions based on the incident. Considerations:  Continue seeking additional information.  Avoid the incident area.  If you “see something, say somethi ng.” Call 911 for all emergencies.  Suspend class where appropriate or cancel class (based on incident’s location and type).  Consider the following actions based on situational awareness: Get out (evacuate). Hide in a safe, securable area (shelter)…lock or secure your doors, if possible. Take action (fight back)…only as an absolute last resort.

Fire Alarm Evacuation  If a fire alarm is activated, immediately:  Suspend class.  Evacuate the building.  Proceed outdoors, and away from the building. Do not use the elevator
