2
Lab Question: How many food calories are in a single cheese puff? Experiment: Burn a cheese puff to heat up water in a soda can calorimeter. Use the temperature change of the water to calculate the food calories of the cheese puff. You will use 100 mL of water and assume it is 100 grams. A calorie is the heat needed to raise 1 gram of water 1 °C. A food calorie is the heat needed to raise 1 kg of water 1 °C.

Before you are allowed to start: What two pieces of data will you need from this lab? How much should you stir gently with the thermometer? How will you know you are finished with this lab? Clean up - dump the water, throw away the burnt cheese puff After the lab: 1.What was the change in temperature of the 100 grams of water? 2.How many calories does this change represent? 3.How many food calories does this change represent? 4.How many food calories does the bag label say each puff should have? 5.What is your percent error for this lab? 6.What is one specific reason the water in the soda can may not have warmed up as much as it should have in this lab?
