What is a pH scale? The pH of a solution was defined as: pH = - log [H + ] Similar definition is made for the [OH - ]: pOH = - log [OH - ]

pK w = pH + pOH at 25 o C 14 = pH + pOH

[H + ] = [OH - ] the solution is neutral (pH=7). [H + ] [OH - ] the solution is acidic (pH 7). [H + ] [OH - ] the solution is alkaline (pH 7).
