ABIM Maintenance of Certification: Rules Regulations and Resources How ACP Can Help
2
2 Agenda Fundamental Concepts for Understanding MOC 2014-2017 Cohort 2018 and Beyond Cohort Time Unlimited Certificate Cohort Public Reporting of MOC Status Graduating Residents and Fellows Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine ACP and ABIM Resources
3
3 Fundamental Concepts Critical to Understanding MOC It is useful to think of MOC as two distinct processes Earning points toward certification Earning points toward “Meeting MOC Requirements” These two process have their own time lines For most diplomates these time lines are not synchronized The two processes and asynchronous time lines causes confusion
4
4 Certification Expires in 2014-2017 Maintaining the Certificate Must earn a total of 100 MOC points at end of current certificate date (10 years) At least 20 in Medical Knowledge At least 20 in Practice Assessment 60 in either area Pass exam every 10 years
5
5 2014-2017 Cohort Meeting MOC Requirements Starting January 1, 2014 Earn some MOC points every 2 years (first milestone by December 31, 2015) Earn 100 MOC points every 5 years (first milestone by end of December 31, 2018) Complete a “patient voice activity” every 5 years Complete an approved patient safety module every 5 years 100 Points count for all certificates and do not have to be specialty specific Pass exam every 10 years
6
6 2014-2017 Cohort Important Notes Points earned before 1/1/14 will count toward maintaining an existing certificate(s) Points earned before 1/1/14 will not count toward “Meeting MOC Requirements” Points earned after 1/1/14 will count for both maintaining an existing certificate(s) and “Meeting MOC Requirements”
7
7 2018 and Beyond Cohort Meeting MOC Requirements Earn some MOC points every 2 years Earn 100 MOC points every 5 years At least 20 in Medical Knowledge At least 20 in Practice Assessment 60 in either area Complete a “patient voice activity” every 5 years Complete an approved patient safety module every 5 years Pass exam every 10 years
8
8 2018 and Beyond Cohort Important Note MOC points earned before 2014 will not count toward certification or toward “Meeting MOC Requirements”
9
9 Patient Safety Requirement Certain Medical Knowledge and Practice Assessment activities also qualify for Patient Safety Only need 1 “activity” in this category every 5 years
10
10 Patient Voice Requirement There will be at least 4 different pathways to meet this requirement to be rolled out before the 2018 deadline. These pathways will support retroactive credit An approved activity completed between 2014-2018 will meet the requirement. ABIM to discuss Modifying or eliminating patient related requirements clinically inactive physicians
11
11 Time Unlimited Certificate Cohort ABIM will honor all certifications already issued To be listed as “Meeting MOC Requirements” enroll in MOC program Status can be changed at any time Meet 2 and 5 year MOC point milestones Complete patient safety and patient voice requirement by milestone dates Pass the exam in 10 years
12
12 Time Unlimited Cohort and the Exam Pass the MOC exam by end of 2023 Not passing the MOC exam has no bearing on certification status, only “Meeting MOC Requirements” status Not completing every component of the MOC program requirements results in "Certified, Not Meeting MOC Requirements” listing on ABIM web site
15
15 Graduating Internal Medicine Residents 2014 graduating residents must enroll in MOC by March 31 2015 Newly certified physicians will receive a fee waiver for 1 year Will be subject to the rules in place for the 2018 and beyond cohort
16
16 Fellowship Trainees Fellows starting in 2014 must enroll in MOC following IM residency by March 31 2015 Newly certified in IM will receive a fee waiver for 1 year Fellows earn 20 MOC points for each eligible year of fellowship training including research (10 in medical knowledge and 10 in practice assessment)
17
17 Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine (FPHM) While the FPHM MOC program is not a subspecialty, it is a variation of Internal Medicine certification Diplomates cannot participate in both the FPHM and Internal Medicine MOC programs simultaneously If diplomates withdraw from FPHM, MOC points will be transferred to IM certificate
18
18 Keeping Track of Points and Deadlines ABIM Personal Website Every 2 year deadlines 5 Year deadlines Exam deadline MOC medical knowledge points Practice assessment points Patient safety Patient voice
