Virus and Microorganisms Notecards 4 th and 5 th Period Due Wednesday (2/18/15) Antibiotic AZT Capsid Host Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Immunization Influenza Lysogenic Cycle Lytic Cycle Lysis Microorganism Parasite Pathogen Retrovirus Vaccine Virus

Essential Question: How does a virus reproduce? Standard: describe viral reproduction (B4C)

Virus HW Quiz On a sheet of paper, answer two out of the three questions. Must be in your own words. Each question must be answered in 1 paragraph (5-7 sentences OR half a page). 1.Why are viruses not living organisms? 2. What is a virus? 3. How do viruses harm us?

Page 58: Virus Reproduction Notes

H. Viral Reproduction 1. Once viral genes are inside the host cell, two processes may occur: the lytic cycle or the lysogenic cycle.

Lytic Cycle

Lytic Cycle (BANG BANG!) 1. The Virus attaches to the outside of the cell. 2. Viral genes are inserted into a host cell. 3. Virus parts are made/replicated. 4. Virus parts are assembled. 5. The host cell bursts/lysis and is destroyed 6. New viruses infect new host cells.

Lytic Cycle - Viruses

Create an analogy……… Partner 4: The Lytic Cycle is like a ___________ because ___________. Partner 3: I agree OR disagree because ______________________.

Lysogenic Cycle Hidden viruses “hide” for a while inside host cells before becoming active Steps to the Lysogenic Cycle: 1.Attach to cell 2.Inject DNA/RNA 3.Integrate/Join DNA/RNA into cell 4.Wait 5.Remove DNA/RNA 6.Become active (lytic cycle)

Lysogenic Cycle - Viruses

Create an analogy……… Partner 3: The Lysogenic Cycle is like a ___________ because __________. Partner 4: I agree OR disagree because ______________________.

DRAW THIS!!!

Sage and Scribe: Cycle Steps Get into partners—decide who is partner A and who is partner B. – Partner A: Describe the steps for the Lytic cycle. – Partner B: Draw each step. After a few minutes, we will switch to the Lysogenic Cycle and you will switch roles.
