Integrating Expanding Annotations with a 3D explosion Probe By Henry Sonnet, Sheelagh Carpendale, and Thomas Strothotte Presented by Ryan Buterbaugh
2
3D: Information Overload? 3D interactive environments can contain lots of information Problems: –occlusion/multiple objects –displaying annotations –separating whole into parts
3
Layers of Information 3D environments can have various info: –model itself –textual annotation –additional multimedia (images/movies/etc) –internally-contained sub-models How can this all be intelligently integrated and easily manipulated and understood?
4
Focus on Text Stipulations for annotating: –must be readable –must be unambiguous as to what is annotated –must not hide other information –minimal or no constraints on size of annotation
5
One Method Create explosion diagrams and allow user to easily request accompanying text
6
Challenges Separating distinct, annotated objects Locating point referenced by annotation How to display annotation –(polygon, shading, connection points, etc)
7
Applications to Midway Gardens How to display annotations for models? Handle occlusion due to multiple versions of uncertainty Handle sub-parts of models –ie: “Note that the hand on this sprite is holding a dove” Effective tool for zooming, expanding, triggering annotations, etc
