About Community Colleges Few have endowments for overseas travel or projects Have limited enrollments & offerings in foreign languages Communities that CCs serve view overseas projects a “luxury” of 4-year colleges & universities. Local tax dollars should not be spent on such luxuries.

About Community Colleges Majority of Federal overseas programs don’t apply to CCs or are difficult to get compared to major universities CCs do obtain projects that are often technical or professional in scope Strong interest by other countries (less industrialized) in US CC model—India, Thailand, Vietnam, China, DR, etc.

About Community Colleges CCs often in better position than universities in developing practical technical or vocational programs that are of high value and are in high demand in developing nations. View some examples

University Development Linkages Project Managed by Sinclair Community College $750,000 funded by USAID, 1992-97 CC faculty developed 12 high impact, short- term training programs targeted to early school leavers, urban & rural poor, and women with limited opportunities Create Centre for Vocational Education (CVE)

University Development Linkages Project By program’s end more than 2,000 trained and employed Hosted int’l conference in Chennai on “Training Options for Early School Leavers.” Over 200 participants from 8 countries. CVE evolved into Madras Community College, second CC in India

Cuyahoga & University of Hawaii CCs Provided 11 Korean vocational education instructors skills upgrading in web programming, digital graphics, UNIX, network security and Cisco networking

St. Louis, Kirkwood, Blackhawk, Eastern Iowa, Harris-Stowe, Brevard, Delaware County, Hawaii and State Center CCs Guyana Ministry of Education sent 15 technical faculty for two months in 11 disciplines for training These faculty and their US mentors conducted 15 three week in-country workshops for 150 Guyanese teachers Disciplines included Fitting & Machining, MIG & TIG welding, Information Technology, Hospitality, Electronics, Electrical Equipment Maintenance & Repair, Agricultural Mechanics, Post Secondary Institutional Management
