Successful Research Collaboration = Communication

What is research collaboration?  Bringing expertise together  Developing a better end product than one developed alone  Helping others  Outreach

Why collaborate?  It is rewarding to work with others Learn more, more efficient  You can’t be the expert at everything  It pays Funding agencies like collaborations (know your audience)  Multi-university, multi-deparment

Types of collaborative research  Usually includes student training, outreach, and/or research  Partnerships with government agencies  Partnerships with other universities  Partnerships with large collaborative groups

Developing collaborative relationships  COMMUNICATION  Be brave and make initial contact  Present an idea for funding  Define roles  Keep the communication going – be willing to be the point person

Nurturing collaborative relationships  COMMUNICATION!!!!  Be a good listener  Be a problem solver  Be pro-active

Research collaboration challenges  Money Another university or organization has higher rates than ISU – ISU might be able to get the research or outreach done ‘cheaper’ One collaborator may feel he/she is getting less compared to another if there are multiple collaborators Solution: define roles and best fits for each organization ahead of time; identify one contact for each collaborating agency

Research collaboration challenges  Publications In large groups with multiple collaborators, who writes what publication? Solution: define roles and papers (to extent possible) ahead of time; identify draft and submittal dates

Research collaboration challenges  Deliverables Collaborator may not deliver on time or may deliver something other than expected Solution: be preventative through frequent communication and setting up dates/goals; if it is too late, have a mid-review meeting and redefine goals if appropriate

Research collaboration challenges  Personalities Every collaborator has a different personality and communicates differently – that’s why he/she brings something unique to the group Solution: decide ahead of time who is the lead member and who will facilitate communication; be a people person (even if it is difficult!); give credit where credit is due
