4 Strategies to expand mineral supplies Substitution: –expensive or scarce one ==> inexpensive or abundant material example: glass fiber ==> copper wire

5 Conservation ( 保育,節約 ): –Recycling: example: Beverage cans are collected, remelted, and reprocessed into new products. –Reuse: example: Beverage bottles are collected, washed, and refilled becoming new products.

6 Changing our mineral requirements: –Our society is a throwaway society. We throwaway items such as PCs, furniture, commercial leaflets, …. –This throwaway attitude has been encouraged by industries looking for short-term economic profits, even though the long-term economic and environmental costs of such an attitude are high.
