MARS Strategic Policy Simulation and Optimisation Final workshop of the DISTILLATE programme Great Minster House, London Tuesday 22 nd January 2008 Paul Pfaffenbichler, Simon Shepherd TUW and ITS, Leeds
2
Objectives To enhance sketch planning models so that they can be used by a wider range of stakeholders

The dynamic land use and transport interaction model MARS MARS is a dynamic land use and transport interaction model. MARS works on a rather high spatial aggregation. MARS includes feedback loops between land use and transport systems. MARS includes the relevant regional means of transport. MARS is deterministic in each iteration but it’s markets are not necessarily in equilibrium. MARS is designed to identify best performing land use and transport strategies. MARS aims at being as transparent as possible („White box“).

Conclusions Several improvements of the MARS model have been made based on the outcome of the DISTILLATE survey. The user friendly interface has been improved. For an improved visualisation of the results MARS was linked to a dynamic GIS software. The MARS modelling suite is an easy to set up and easy to use tool to explore, assess and optimise the outcome of complex land use and transport strategies.
