Plant Structures STEMS By: Becky McGuire
2
Purposes a. attachment point for leaves, flowers, fruit b. contain food and water distribution system (vascular bundles)
3
Vascular System a. xylem: water and nutrients taken from roots to leaves b. phloem: manufactured food distributed to all parts of the plants
4
Vascular System, cont. C. monocot: bundles scattered throughout stem D. dicots: segregated into circular pattern; separated by cambium layer (produces new xylem & phloem cells)
5
Structures a. nodes: point on a stem where a leaf attaches b. internode: area between nodes
6
Specialization a. food storage: tubers, corms, bulbs, rhizomes, grape tendrils b. rhizomes: run horizontally below ground; begonias, quackgrass c. stolons: stems growing along surface of ground and root at nodes; strawberries
