2 The Challenge Technology is a driving force in the global economy Innovation is the lifeblood of technology Technology must be extended beyond its traditional user base Computing must be affordable, accessible, and relevant to all communities But, there are some tough research problems to solve

3 A Research Agenda Devices form factors evolution of mobile phones Connectivity environments without existing network infrastructures; or, intermittent availability Appropriate user interfaces challenges in literacy and for novice users of technology Relevant applications provide benefits in such areas as health, education, and commerce

4 Approach Support fundamental academic research projects to advance the state-of-the-art of technologies that can be relevant to Digital Inclusion Pursue applied research, such as “test beds” and “proof-of-concept” field experiments Prime consideration was given to those proposals that had support from NGO partners

5 The MSR Digital Inclusion Project $1.2M worldwide RFP in academic Research targeted to making information technology affordable, accessible, and relevant for the underserved A call for proposals was issued to the worldwide academic research community in late 2005 In January we received 162 proposals representing 34 countries 44 MSR and Microsoft people were involved in the review cycle In February, seventeen (17) research projects were selected; representing 10 countries
