Migrant Mother, 1936 Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) Black and White Photograph, Farm Security Administration, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Artistic expression, whether it be paintings or photographs, can tell a story that depicts not only the struggles of individuals but the struggle of an entire nation. Dorothea Lange played an important role in documenting the plight of the human condition in the 1930s. Her images made the Great Depression tangible.
4
Lange visualized the causes and effects of the Great Depression, helping my students gain a greater understanding and empathy. Students learned that questioning and critical thinking are useful tools to gain information. Students learned valuable skills needed to use technology, which can enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote critical thinking.

“This photo helps me understand this time in history because I can infer that the Migrant Mother looks troubled.” Esmond Elementary Student Javonne, 6 TH Grade

Collaboration Is Key
10
What My Students Learned: How to look at a work of art. How to describe in detail what they see in a work of art. How to make connections with artistic expression and social/cultural events in history. How to appreciate American art. How to listen to the opinions and perspectives of others. That what they infer and say has meaning. That learning with technology allows them to have access to a great selection of online learning tools.
11
What Did I Learn? That if I place value on a learning experience my students will pay attention. That teaching with art makes the lesson more interesting. That what began as a lesson turned into a journey-- Great Depression, Poverty, Hunger in America. This lesson can lead to a unit. Using technology is a must for both teacher and student growth. That collaboration ensures student success.
