Physics 220 Getting Started Get a copy of the text and the “Physics 220 Packet” from the Bookstore. A few copies of the text (QC 23.s458 1996 ol. 2) are available in the reserve library and scattered throughout the complex of Physics Tutorial labs (N304). Choose a class ID number (CID) Locate the following: –The classroom: 445MARB. –The distribution center in the hall just outside N375 ESC. Notice the ‘220 Homework’ slots near the left-hand end near the floor; this is where you submit homework. You get it back in one of the 100 slots to the right. There are also slots for late homework and appeals. The Physics 106/220 Tutorial Lab: N304 ESC. –The display cases: in the hallway near N361 ESC, where solutions to homework and exams are posted. –The Walk-in lab: S415 ESC. –The reserve library - (now located near the circulation desk) if you intend to use any of the materials we have placed on reserve.

Do the following: –Read the Syllabus - the whole thing. –Do homework assignment #1 and turn it in online by. –Read Preface xvii through xxiv and 23.1 through 23.5 in preparation for the next class. –Buy clicker & bring it to class on Friday. Fill out the questionnaire and put it in your homework slot if you didn’t do it now.

Graded Items: Warmups – Daily before class (before 1:20 p.m. please) Clickers (quizzes) – Daily in class Homework –MWF before class. Labs – ~weekly S415 ESC Exams – Five midterms and Final. Testing Center

Study Guide: Not graded but will show up periodically on warmups

Warm-ups: I liked the warm ups. they helped me to train my thinking. I could see where my thought process went wrong.

Quizzes (Clickers) Clicker quizzes promote in-class discussion and thought. I loved the clicker quizzes, because I felt like they gave me the chance to think things through and then have immediate feedback on whether I was thinking right or not. Most of the time I wasn't, but then it made sense when we would talk about it right after

“Enter to learn to love learning” “.... Academic assignments, test scores and cumulative GPA have not produced a final and polished product... foundation of learning.... The particular topics investigated and learned are not nearly as important as what has been learned about learning.” (Elder Bednar, April 2008 BYU Commencement talk)

What has been learned about learning When we do not know what to do.... Confronted with a problem that has no clear answer can we discern what to do? Nephi was instructed to build something he had never built before to go somewhere he had never been before.

Groups Sit with your group every day When a discussion question is given discuss it with your group and decide on the best answer. Then enter your answer with your individual clicker. If you do not understand something in class please quietly talk to your group about it— Talking in class when I am talking is encouraged if the discussion helps you to better understand what I am presenting.

Electric Charge Like charges repel. Unlike charges attract.

Discussion question: Three insulating rods are suspended from thin threads. Each of the rods are charged. It is found that rods 1 and 2 repel each other and that rods 2 and 3 repel each other. From this we can conclude that 1.1 and 3 carry charges of opposite sign. 2.1 and 3 carry charges of equal sign. 3.All three carry charges of the same sign

Discussion question: Three rods are suspended from thin threads. It is found that rods 1 and 2 attract each other and that rods 2 and 3 repel each other. From this we can conclude that 1.1 and 3 carry charges of opposite sign. 2.1 and 3 carry charges of the same sign. 3.All three carry charges of the same sign 4.One of the objects carries no charge. 5.We need to do more experiments to answer the question above.

Charging a rod Charge by conduction Charge by induction— induced charge
