4 3- Finding the Meaning of New Words: Looking at Colons Sometimes a colon (:) can help you to understand a new word. If you know the key word or words on one side of the colon, then you can figure out the meaning of the word or words on the other side of the colon. Example: - There are terrible afflictions: malaria, cancer, and TB. What are some example of afflictions? Malaria, cancer, and TB.
