5 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION 4 WEEKS OF SPANISH CLASSES PONTIFICIA UNIVERSITY OF SALAMANCA (UPSA) FIVE EXCURSIONS: AVILA, MADRID, LA ALBERCA, SEGOVIA, PORTUGAL SCHOOL AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES 4 WEEKS LODGING WITH SPANISH FAMILIES,3 MEALS,LAUNDRY (1-2 loads per week) 6 SPANISH CREDITS (SPAN 1601, 2603, 3603, 3661, AND SOME ELECTIVES) INSURANCE FOR EMERGENCY EXIT WITH UCM INSURANCE FOR MINOR EMERGENCIES WITH UPSA TRANSFER AIRPORT MADRID – SALAMANCA (arrival-departure)

6 PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS Attendance: Consistent attendance is essential to acquire the skills needed to learn a new language. Daily attendance to classes and cultural activities at the Pontificia University of Salamanca, field trips, and excursions is expected during this program. Attendance reports provided by the Pontificia University of Salamanca will be collected by Program Director at the end of each week of classes. Participation: Participation takes into account a number of *variables including but not limited to: *1) your use of Spanish in class and after (afternoon activities, excursions, and families), 2) your willingness to participate when providing oral answers from assignments, oral activities in small groups, and the whole class, 3) your cooperation in group and pair work, 4) your respect and attitude towards the class, your peers, instructors, and families. 5) bringing your book or materials, and homework everyday to class. (4.34 points per day) Projects: Daily Journal used for a Final Paper (5-6 pages) describing this experience. Extra Project for students receiving credits for a specific class.

7 PREPARATION PASSPORT REGISTRATION FORM TOUR DIRECTOR (JANUARY) REGISTRATION EXTENDED CAMPUS (DISTRIBUTED BY TOUR DIRECTOR ) PERSONAL MEDICAL INSURANCE (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED) FINANCIAL AID (CONTACT THE OFFICE OF FINANCIAL AID) AIRFARE KANSAS CITY (or your place of departure, but same connection to Madrid) MADRID (SAME FLIGHT AND CONNECTIONS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED). NO DEBT WITH THE UNIVERSITY BEFORE ENROLLING IN THIS PROGRAM

8 FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION Student submits 3 forms: FAFSA for the current 2008/2009 academic year FAFSA for the current 2008/2009 academic year Request to Receive Financial Aid for International Study Request to Receive Financial Aid for International Study Request for Summer Financial Aid (available March of 2009) Request for Summer Financial Aid (available March of 2009) Note: the Request to Receive Financial Aid for International Study and Request for Summer Financial Aid must be submitted together for consideration. * Students must be: Fully admitted to UCM as degree seeking Receiving credits for the tour Enrolled at least half-time for the semester or term the tour takes place (1/2-time= 4 cr. hrs. UG, 3 cr. hrs.G) *Students who have used most (or all) of their 2008/2009 federal financial aid will have to rely on other sources to cover expenses. *Federal financial aid cannot be disbursed more than 10 days prior to the start of an enrollment term. Make sure you can find other ways to pay before you receive your loan. ***Study Tour Installments due prior to that date will have to be paid out-of-pocket.

9 SIX CREDITS SPANISH MINORS AND MAJORS WILL RECEIVE SIX CREDITS AFTER COMPLETION OF PROGRAM AND PREPARATION OF A FINAL PAPER DESCRIBING THIS EXPERIENCE (IN SPANISH). +SPANISH (ELEMENTARY I) +SPANISH 2603 (CONVERSATION I) +SPANISH 3603 (CONVERSATION II) +SPANISH 3661 (CIVILIZATION & LITERATURE) SPANISH ELECTIVES: STUDENTS RECEIVING CREDITS FOR AN ELECTIVE CLASS NEED TO PREPARE PROJECT(S) RELATED TO THE MATERIAL COVERED IN THAT SPECIFIC CLASS. *Other classes possible if needed. +SPANISH 4665 (CULTURE & ISSUES CONTEMPORARY SPANISH WORLD) +SPANISH 4671 (CINEMA OF THE SPANISH-SPEAKING WORLD) ELEMENTARY SPANISH STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE 3 CREDITS FOR SPANISH I, AND ALSO 3 CREDITS FOR A GENERAL STUDIES CLASS (taking a Spanish Civilization class in English). Minimum 5 students.

10 APPROXIMATED COST 6 CREDITS UCM – INSURANCE EMERGENCY EXIT: $1,317.00 SPAIN PROGRAM: $2,950.00 4 WEEKS CLASSES & MATERIALS,MUSEUMS, LODGGING, 3 DAILY MEALS, LAUNDRY (1-2 loads per week), 5 EXCURSIONS, TRANSFER AIRPORT-SALAMANCA, INSURANCE MINOR EMERGENCIES. AIRFARE (ROUND TRIP) KANSAS CITY– MADRID: $1,200 – 1.500 (AS 08-2008) We will buy online same flights and connections. We must arrive to Madrid on same flight to take advantage of private bus. Students with different flights would have to arrive to Salamanca on their own using public transportation. OTHER OPTIONAL COSTS: SOUVENIRS, INDEPENDENT TRIPS, EXTRA MEALS-SNACKS, Cell & Phone minutes ($100) TRANSPORTATION BUS ($1.50 each ride)-TAXI ($5-10 – 3 persons per taxi)
