The Woodwind Family The Woodwind family is made up of flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, and saxophones.

Flute The flute is one of the highest sounding instruments in the band. The flute is held horizontally, unlike most other instruments that are held vertically. Clarinet The clarinet is played by pressing on keys with the players fingers. A reed, which is on the mouthpiece, is used to produce sound.

French Horn The french horn has the biggest range of all the brass instruments. The player’s left hand presses on the valves, and the right hand is placed inside the bell.
