This is a quick summary of 1680 species-area curves from the tallgrass prairie plots. Some things to note: FIRST: don’t trust the data too much, because they are amalgamations of all curves. Individual curves may have a different functional form than the average of all curves!!!! The median is extremely close to the mean. The power (Arrhenius) equation is problematic because of zeros. There is less curviness to the log-log curve than the loglinear curve, therefore Casting some doubt on Rosenzweig’s assertion that plant ecologists find Gleason curves more often. However, we need to wait until we do the curve-by-curve analysis. Richness at one scale is correlated with richness at another scale – no big surprise. The Zobel’s null model of uniform values under the diagonal is clearly wrong – But we knew that anyway on a priori grounds.
