Case Study #1 A doctoral student working in a research lab and funded through a national research award of her supervisor fabricated research data to obtain significant positive results. On the basis of these fabricated data, the supervisor and others, including the student, published two papers in prestigious journals.

8. College of Graduate Studies & Research CGSR Activities: Fall Workshop, con’t. The fabricated data were discovered when another student working on the project failed to replicate the findings. The student, when confronted with the questionable findings, originally denied and then later admitted the deception, and resigned from the academic program and from the research program.

As members of the hearing panel of CGSR, review the information and propose a decision which may or may not include consequences for the student, penalties to the student, and recommendations for instructors and departments.
