MICO Alain Blondel 17 March 2008 2 MICE target test-run 14-15 March 2008 Friday 14/03/2008 6:00-> 18:00 Saturday 15/03/2008 8:00 -> 18:00 Aims: run up to 5000 shots of the MICE target in stable mode Measure particle production with the beam line in positive (450 MeV/c protons) configuration TGT (Q1Q2Q3) B1 -no DKS- ICL1 GVA1 B2 (Q4Q5Q6) ICL2 GVA2 Achieved The target was successfully run in synchronization with the beam; both depth and delay of the target dip were investigated, up to the limit given by any beam loss monitor reading <50 mV; this limit was found to be reasonably stable and not oversensitive to the dip depth. At the end of the shift we were able to run the target at a good stable setting and a frequency of 50/128Hz while running ISIS at 50Hz, frequency at which it was verified that the target was hitting properly the end of one ISIS fill without scraping the following one; this was a mode of operation similar to what we would have running MICE in parasitic mode. A radiation survey was conducted soon after the conclusion of the shift, after a total of 3679 target pulses, and showed no significant increase of radiation. Also Installed detectors from ICL and GVA, cabled and running. Verified proper monitoring of MICE magnet PS Logbook worked! https://micelog.dl.ac.uk (mice pwd: mice123)https://micelog.dl.ac.uk

MICO Alain Blondel 17 March 2008 3 Not achieved: However, due to a failure in the power supply of one of the MICE beam line dipoles, (B1) we could not verify the rate of useful particle production. This important measurement will have to be scheduled after the coming shut-down, during which proper operation of all the MICE beam line magnets will be tested.
