Tornado Weather Safety! By: Sally, Jim, Sam, Bob, Katie, Joe, Casey
2
Facts About Tornadoes A tornado looks like a funnel with the fat part at the top. Inside, the winds may swirl up to 300 mph. Tornadoes can flatten homes, throw cars around and destroy towns. Sometimes you can’t see the Tornado. It could be wrapped in rain. Tornados make a loud roar. Like the sound of a Train!
3
Tornado Watches and Warnings! A tornado watch is when the National Weather Service says a tornado could develop later. The sky could look normal and blue but watch the local news or listen to the radio just in case! A tornado warning is when the NWS says they have seen a tornado and it could be moving toward your house. When you see large hail, the tornado could be close to you. Immediately GO INSIDE!
4
If you are in your home when a tornado warning is issued… Go to your basement and get under a workbench or the stairs if you have one! If you do not have a basement, go to a closet on the inside wall, a bathroom, or a hallway on the lowest level of your house!
5
If you are at school when a tornado warning is issued… Always follow directions from your teachers! –Go to an inside wall or the lowest floor. –Crouch near the wall. Bend over and put your hands behind your head for protection. –Stay away from glass and windows or big rooms like the gym or library.
6
If you are in a car when a tornado warning is issued… Get out of your car and go into the closest house or building. DO NOT try to outrun a tornado. If you are caught outside, crouch low in a ditch or crouch near a strong building and cover your head with your hands.

Lightning Safety! By: Carrie, Tom, Billy, Sarah, Jeff, Amy, Alex
9
Facts About Lightning! Lightning kills more people than hurricanes and tornadoes. At any moment, there are 2,000 lightning storms around the world! Everyday someone is struck by lightning. Some people survive lightning strikes but have to live with life changing injuries.
10
Lightning… Keep an eye on the sky. On a hot day, the clouds can build up and develop. As they develop, small bits in the cloud become charged with electricity. When charges overflow they make lightning flashes. Lightning may go from one cloud to another or from a cloud to the ground. Lightning hits the tallest object.
11
What to do when there is lightning… Get into your home or a large building. Get inside a hard-topped car. If you are in a field, crouch on your knees and bend over. If you are in water, get out! Get away from the beach.
12
Once inside… Keep away from doors and windows. Turn off the tv and computer and do not use the microwave or other electronic appliances. Stay away from sinks and tubs. Don’t use the telephone unless there is an emergency!

Flood Safety! By: James, Tara, John, Eric, Kelly, Megan
15
Facts About Floods! Floods are too much water on dry land. Rivers can flood after heavy rain has fallen for a long time. Flooding can occur any time of the year. Flash floods may occur even when it’s not raining where you are. Rain may be washed down a river to where you are.
16
Flash Flood Warning! This means there is flooding RIGHT NOW! Get away from low-lying roads and other low spots. Keep an eye on streams to see if water is rising. Get to higher ground!
17
When there is flooding… STAY CALM!! Move to higher ground- leave everything and run! If you are camping, make sure you listen to the radio and have a back up plan should it start to rain. If you are outside, keep out of storm drains, irrigation ditches, or other waterways. Do not get under lone trees.
18
If you are in a car during a flood… Watch for flooding on bridges and low points. Stay off bridges, they could wash away during a flood. If your car becomes washed away by the flood, get out of your car and swim to higher ground. Do not try to outrun a flash flood!
