Why engagement with students is an issue Large lectures (100+ students) limit direct staff/student interaction Online interaction can seem distant Lack of student engagement can lead to – For students: poor attendance and then drop out – For staff: poor job satisfaction – For all: poor motivation and poor results

Engaging with students online in CMS Personalisation of Staff and Student Intranets is the key A number of effective Interactive Intranet Systems have been developed by CMS – Coursework uploads and feedback – Audio feedback – Student Enquiries – Project student interaction with supervisors – Forums – Personal Development Programme system

Engaging with CMS Project students 422 Masters projects 332 Undergraduate projects Staff typically supervise 10 students Little direct contact between supervisor and student Online systems – Students Blog (supervisor can comment) – Staff record meetings (student can comment) – Students upload interim documents (staff can comment and approve)
