2 Chapter 3 1932 FDR takes office and creates programs to keep individuals busy Private Sector –Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA/YWCA 1943- Physical Education is a complete failure and should be replaced by “Fitness Programs” 1950’s Hans Kraus & Ruth Hirschland

3 Chapter 3 President Eisenhower forms the “Presidents Council on Youth Fitness”/Physical Fitness & Sport Two fitness-leaders emerge Jack LaLanne & Charles Atlas 1954 Brown vs Board of Education 1956 Rosa Parks 1957 Russians send Sputnik into space

4 Chapter 3 1967 Bowerman writes “Jogging” 1968 Kenneth Cooper “Aerobics” 1969 Sorenson starts Aerobic Dance 1972 Title IX of the Educational Amendments act passes 1975 U.S. Congress passes Bill S.6 94- 142(education of all handicapped children)
