Brief Background DOE InterLab 2002 –Presentation called “MIA: Standards for Linking and Logos”, which focused on LANL’s standards and guidance situation –Proposal for DOE InterLab communications regarding standards and guidance at other Labs “Birds-of-a-Feather” Breakout –Several interested participants –Brainstormed on all the areas of interest/concern –Decision to create a Web site containing information to be shared

3. The Web Site After 6 months, the site was finally launchedsite –Ann Peterson, LANL, designed layout –Only a “straw man” of what could be published Issues with Release of LANL Standards –CIO concerned with allowing this information to be published on the External site –New CIO Wanted time to get up to speed on the whole idea; put on back-burner Email sent to all users on the doe-standards@lanl.gov listdoe-standards@lanl.gov –Comprised of users from the 2002 InterLab Conference –Very little response

The Survey Shortly after the announcement of the 2003 InterLab Conference, I sent an email to doe-standards@lanl.gov, and then later, to Labs who had not respondeddoe-standards@lanl.gov Survey questions were regarding Web standards in general 13 Labs Responded  BNL  FermiLab  INEEL  Johns Hopkins Applied Physic  LBNL  LLNL  LANL  MIT Lincoln Lab  NCAR  NREL  ORNL  SNL  SRS (SRTC)

5. Some Interesting Results 50% do not have Web standards committees 45% standards have strong influence on Web development 25% standards have mediocre influence on Web development 30% standards have little to no influence on Web development 50% have centralized point of contact for Web development Of those with Web standards, 95% use the Web for disseminating their information –Other modes include presentations, demos, bulletins, posters, and word of mouth

Some Other Interesting Stats Types of Standards: –Browser Issues : 90% –Web Publishing : 90% –Design Issues : 60% –508 Accessibility : 40% –Technical : 40% Biggest Issues –Enforcement –Changes in technology –Control Greatest Successes –508 Compliance –Standards being used –More detailed standards being developed –Development of Advisory Groups/Teams
