What is Bioinformatics? The science of informatics as applied to biological research. Informatics is the management and analysis of data using advanced computing techniques. Statisticians are supposed to be experts in analyzing data

What kind of data? Usually, in bioinformatics we deal with genomics, proteomics or metabolomics data. Example: Microarray data, Mass Spectrometry data and high dimensional data from different metabolites.

DNA Microarray A DNA microarray (or "chip") enables the geneticist to monitor the expression patterns of numerous genes (potentially all of the genes in a given cell type) at the same time. Example: Finding genes/biomarkers for cancer Identify the set of genes that are “differentially expressed” between normal and cancer cells microarray experiment among two (or more) cell types e.g., 1 = normal cell; 2 = cancer cell

cDNA microarray Data: log (R / G)

Analyzing Microarray Data: Goal: to find differentially expressed genes Problem: obscure variability mixed with true Solution (using Statistics!)

Biological question Differentially expressed genes Sample class prediction etc. Testing Biological verification and interpretation Microarray experiment Estimation Experimental design Image analysis Normalization Clustering Discrimination R, G 16-bit TIFF files (Rfg, Rbg), (Gfg, Gbg)

Decision Science Understanding decision making in the context of public health  To understand how decisions are made  To improve decision making  To study specific decision making problems

Combination of clinical research methodology, biostatistics, and psychology All of these areas of interest have an impact on clinical decision making

Decision Analysis An explicit process to understand a decision and make the best decision in the face of uncertainty.

Decision Science Courses at SPHIS Introduction to Medical Decision Making Advanced Medical Decision Making Decision Analysis (Speed School) Utility Theory and Measurement Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
