An Action Research approach to investigate the use of technology (mind mapping software) to capture class discussion Nikki Sowe

Why do the Action Research? The study of a situation with a view to improving the quality of action within it (Altrichter, Posch and Somekh, 2000) Starting point was my impression (Altrichter, Posch and Somekh, 2000) that class discussion could be better captured and developed with increased engagement of students As an Advanced Practitioner and Teacher Educator, needed to role model use of technology Wanted to both change and understand something I do in my practice Never done Action Research before!! – scary…..

Action Research Reconnaissance 2 Cycles (Elliott, 1991) Triangulation – Diary, Document Analysis and interview/self-observation Supported by supervisor Encouraged my reflection http://www.jeanmcniff.com/index.html

Practice Wanted to capture discussion with more visual impact and engagement of students that enabled it to be: –Shared among the group –Referred to later –Added to at a later date –Used as revision notes, class notes or portfolio evidence –Used as a record of any actions/responsibilities –A record of the process of the discussion

Discussion and concept mapping Concept map is a web diagram where is ‘node’ contains an idea, concept or question are linked together by branches to show their relationship to each other A powerful tool …to unlock the potential of the brain. Full range of cortical skills – word, image, number, logic, rhythm, colour and spatial awareness,,, (Buzan Centre website, 2003) 15 benefits of Discussion (Brookfield and Preskill, 1999) what benefits of discussion do we identify
