3. About Jelly Belly The Goelitz family has been making candy since 1869. They started out with owning an ice cream and candy shop. The 2 nd generation made a new type of candy called “buttercream” candies. They have been using the same recipe since about the 1900’s. The candies got the Goelitz family through the depression. The great grandsons of Gustav Goelitz are still making candy today. In 1976 the first eight flavors of Jelly Beans were made. They were Very Cherry, Lemon, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Root Beer, Grape, and Licorice.
