By Meghan Marfise Grade 3 CA content standard: Physical Science. (E) Students know matter has three forms: solids, liquid, and gas.
3
States of Matter All materials are made of very small particles that are held together by force. These materials are put into 1 of 3 categories Solids Liquids Gases
4
Solids Keep one definite shape Do not move or flow Firm or compact Particles are very close together so they can hardly move
5
Liquids Move or flow Change their shape Take the shape of their container Particles are not as tightly packed, so they can move a little Take up the same amount of space, even when their container changes
6
Gases Change their shape and can be squashed Spread out freely Particles are spread out and can move easily Spread out into all of the surrounding area
7
Ms. Marfise’s Lesson
8
Temperature Can change the state of matter Heating Will change a material from a solid -> Liquid -> Gas
9
Temperature: Cooling Cooling Will change a material from a gas -> Liquid -> Solid
10
Examples Water can be either a Solid, Liquid, or Gas Solid= ice Liquid=water Gas=water vapor
