Databases are Everywhere
6
The Ubiquity and Power of Databases Raise Novel Legal and Social Issues ● Music file sharing works only if there is an effective database ● Network effects depend upon scope and ease of access – and databases are the key to that access
7
Security and Privacy ● One piece of information is not a picture,.... ● Databases make possible massive fusion of disparate pieces of information 02:00 AM Sep. 18, 2003 PT JetBlue Airways confirmed on Thursday that in September 2002, it provided 5 million passenger itineraries to a defense contractor for proof-of-concept testing of a Pentagon project unrelated to airline security -- with help from the Transportation Security Administration. The contractor, Torch Concepts, then augmented that data with Social Security numbers and other sensitive personal information, including income level, to develop what looks to be a study of whether passenger-profiling systems such as CAPPS II are feasible.... Sunday, January 18, 2004 Posted: 9:16 AM EST (1416 GMT) MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) -- Northwest Airlines gave information on passengers to the federal government for a secret air-security projecThe carrier declined to say how many passenger records were shared with NASA from the period offered, October to December 2001. More than 10.9 million passengers traveled on Northwest flights during that time, according to the Transportation Department..... Such records typically include credit card numbers, addresses and telephone numbers. NASA said it used the information to investigate whether "data mining" of the records could improve assessments of threats posed by passengers, according to the agency's written responses to questions.

Assignment Look at two different databases: Wordnet and IRIS. – Wordnet http://www.cogsci.princeton.edu/~wnhttp://www.cogsci.princeton.edu/~wn ● Read the materials at the site and try several searches. You may also find this book review of use: http://www.dlib.org/dlib/october98/10bookreview.html http://www.dlib.org/dlib/october98/10bookreview.html – IRIS http://libraries.rutgers.eduhttp://libraries.rutgers.edu ● How is it structured? What are the basic units of data?
