It’s a story about several women in Amy Tan’s family
Each of these women suffered a terrible fate
Amy Tan gradually understand that a concubine is like some kind of prostitute.

4. Topic Discussion: The status of women
At this part of report, our group has divided the women into four part:
Women
Ancient eastern women
Modern eastern women
Ancient western women
Modern western women

5. 1. Ancient eastern women Maybe the most miserable status
They were always considered to be goods and the tool of making babies
They had to obey their parents, masters, husband and even their brothers
The status of ancient eastern women were like these slaves who don’t have freedom, human rights

6. 2. Ancient western women Had better status than ancient eastern women
They thought women can help men do some farm work and give birth to babies who were considered to be the gifts from God
Women in western are more respected than the eastern
In somewhere the women even dominate a family

7. 3 Modern eastern women
Started to fight for their dignity and the right to speak by writing some articles and demonstration
Gradually, the eastern society improved their laws to protect women
Women also started to occupy the important position

8. 4. Modern western women Had had a lot of respect about 1800s AD
They had the right to vote and elect after the war
This situation was earlier than the eastern
The concept of sexual equality started to spread to the world.

9. Women’s status in Taiwan
Nowadays women’s status in Taiwan has a big change
The women’s status has risen.
But the status in Taiwan also has many spaces to grow up
We can see this change from a lot of sides
The following we will talk about two most important parts, politic and education

10. Politic
Women in our country had the vote in 1947 when the Constitution enacted
Women are not involved in political like men are, however women's political participation is increasing
There are new and different issues discussed among women's organizations, and many issues are being presented to the public.

11. Education
The education system has grown very rapidly since the 1950's, and opened the school-gate for women
In 1995, the percentage of female students in all educational levels is close to half of all students
However, this enrollment ratio doesn't extend to the advanced educational levels
The women’s in Taiwan has a huge growth. But for the truly equal status between genders, there are still many places we have to improve.

12. Differences between eastern and western culture
Most of the eastern people are more conservative
Most of the elderly western people have the courage to wear flamboyant dress during their twilight years
Eastern elderly people will like to wear dark colored dress.
Western people don't care much about how other people look at them

13. Western people are more creative
Eastern people like to do things by following the rules, and follow the path that other people have passed by
Western people will be more adventurous and have the courage to take risk
By this way, Western people will find their way out, if they face failure, they will learn from it and finally get success

14. Self reflection In the past, women have no status at all in the east
Similarly, In the west, women seem to have less right than men
Even nowadays, these phenomenon still exist
However, these phenomenon have started to changed and improved.

15. We think that women can do what men can do as well
We think that women can do what men can do as well. We should not limit women to do what they want to do and what they can do.
