Physics news and plans Physics–HLT–Computing meeting LHCb week, Heidelberg, Sep 13, 2006 Olivier Schneider (EPFL) – Physics organisation – Updated plans for MC studies with DC04 and DC06 samples – based on timescale estimates from reconstruction and computing groups – discussed and agreed within the PPG – exposed now to the collaboration

O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20062 Physics organisation oCurrent physics organisation (was set up in Spring 2005): —6 working groups, each with two co-conveners —Physics Planning Group membership: 12 WG conveners 5 ex-officio members (spokesman and deputy, trigger and computing project leaders or their deputies, physics coordinator) —Understanding was that this organisation would be reviewed after ~2 years Many thanks to both Frederic and Clara oChange of convenership of Jets working group: —Frederic Teubert expressed wish to be replaced —Clara Matteuzzi agreed to replace Frederic as Jets WG co-convener (with Aurelio Bay) and as PPG member, for the rest of his term —Change effective September 1, 2006 —Main goal of Jets WG until Spring 2007: – reach some conclusion on the light Higgs sensitivity

O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20063 Why make new plans now ? oJune 2005: —New physics organisation with plans, in the form of a proposal to write a “physics book” (by end of 2006) based on new software and MC samples oSince then: —Several month delay accumulated with respect to original schedule for final version of the reconstruction software and DC06 samples for physics analysis —“Physics book” timescale became irrealistic (and was not updated) —Physics WGs have been living with uncertain schedules oRecently: —some uncertainties reduced: Simulation of bb sample well underway New physics-quality version of Brunel “around the corner” First data-taking now expected end of 2007 (0.9 TeV) and mid-2008 (14 TeV) oNow: —Good time to make (again) plans for MC studies until first data-taking

O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20064 Goal and overall timescale oGoal: get ready for real data taking and analysis —Move as soon as possible to the new software and MC samples finish exploitation of the DC04 samples in a timely manner —Develop HLT and perform in-depth MC studies of a few important measurements, using the software as “at the start of the experiment” —Write a document (called “physics book” until someone finds a better name) Description of algorithms for trigger, reconstruction, selection, calibration, … Expected (i.e. MC) performance of these algorithms Detailed studies of a few important physics measurements, showing how the measurements are going to be performed (procedures to extract info from real data, use of control samples, etc …) oOverall timescale: —Finish in fall 2007, before pilot run Want to look at real data (not MC) between pilot run and 2008 run Whole exercise can reveal items needing (further) work until mid-2008

O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20065 Studies with DC04 samples (plans) oWe want to: —Finish exploitation of the DC04 samples in a timely manner Because we want people to be ready to move to DC06 samples —Document DC04 studies Public LHCb notes, reviewed by EB, whenever possible Will serve as supporting documents for the Yellow report of Flavour workshop (clearly we use Flavour workshop as an incentive) oSo: —Encourage prompt conclusion of studies with DC04 samples Many studies well advanced, need to wrap up —Make list of desired LHCb notes, attach names to them, and encourage early edition oDeadline —end March 2007 (= end of Flavour workshop) oReview status in LHCb weeks: —this week: … —end Nov:results available, at least in preliminary form —early March: results finalized, LHCb notes drafted

O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20066 Studies with DC04 samples (topics) oContributions to Flavour workshop on rare decays: —Sensitivity studies for B 0 K *0 + -, B s , b —Yield and background estimates for B s + -, B 0 K *0 + perhaps b + -, B e , … oContributions to Flavour workshop on UT angles: —Sensitivities to (tree decays), (B , ), and (B 0 J/ K S ) —B hh analysis oContributions to Flavour workshop on B s mixing: —lifetimes measurements — m s and s oContributions to Flavour workshop on b s hadronic transitions: —Yield and background estimate for B 0 K S oOther studies: —Charm —Jets, Higgs

O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20067 New MC production: priorities oPrevious plan: —First simulate strippable samples (needed for computing challenge) 25M+25M inclusive bb events at L=2 10 32 and 5 10 32 cm –2 s –1 25M+25M biased bb events at L=2 10 32 and 5 10 32 cm –2 s –1 —Then reconstruct them + produce all the other events types (exclusive B decays, …) at both luminosities oCurrent status (Sep 8) of simulation with physics-quality Gauss and Boole: 40.4M+26.5M inclusive bb events simulated at L=2 10 32 and 5 10 32 cm –2 s –1 no biased bb events simulated at L=2 10 32 and 5 10 32 cm –2 s –1 oDue to delays, worry that large signal samples for tagging studies will be available too late change priorities —Would like to investigate possibilities to speed up large signal sample production E.g. stop bb simulation now and start signal simulation, produce and strip biased bb samples later
8
O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20068 Physics reconstr. and stripping oLarge background samples (e.g. inclusive bb): —Need to be reconstructed (rDST) and stripped with pre-selections (DST) —Want small fraction (tbd) without stripping (DST) oLarge signal samples (for tagging studies) —Need to be reconstructed (DST) —Need to be stripped with (partial ?) trigger and offline selections (DST) oMinimum bias sample: —Apply partial (low-level) trigger on DIGI files —Reconstruct events passing trigger (DST)
9
O. SchneiderPhysics-HLT-Computing meeting, LHCb week, Sep 13, 20069 Plans, phase 1: get ready for reconstruction & stripping oSep 06: —Define studies to be done, questions to be answered —Decide what needs to be checked in the new test MC samples (efficiencies, resolutions. …) —Build team of guinea-physicists ready to perform these checks oEnd Sep 06: —New version of Brunel available oOct 06: —Produce test signal samples in DST format, look at them with physicists’ eyes and give feedback to reconstruction —Reconstruction+stripping tests on bb events (low and high lumi)
