3 Characters Hatter: He carries hats around to sell. Even the hat on his head is meant to be sold. The phrase “Mad as a hatter” existed long before the character. A fictional character initially encountered at a tea party.

4 Characters March Hare: He begins the conversation with Alice by offering her some wine, but there is no wine. Later, Hatter and March Hare keep frustrating Alice. “Mad as a March Hare” is a common phrase in Carroll’s time. It is based on popular belief about hares’ behavior at the beginning of the long breeding season.

5 Characters Dormouse: He is fast asleep, and wakes up every now and then. Hatter and March Hare put their elbows on him as a cushion. Eventually he is put in a teapot by Mad Hatter and March Hare.
