MDDS: monument damage diagnostic system
MDDS: monument damage diagnostic system. A decision support system for architects, conservators, authorities, students, ……
2
Degradation processes
degradation processes: mechanism & essential conditions influencing factors, like environment (conditions) material properties (conditions) Diagnosis + conservation / intervention Use MDDS
3
Why a diagnosis? Diagnosis of damage: assessing why restoration / intervention / maintenance is necessary Extremely important in order to guarantee a durable conservation
4
Look-alike damages: push out
push out: crypto-florescence push out: frost action
5
Comparable crack types: different causes
6
Illustrated glossary of
damage types & definitions is contained in MDDS
7
Foreseen users Restoration architects Authorities / Monumenten Wacht
Education (university students) General Support communication: damage atlas, definitions Background information: diagnosis, conservation techniques
8
Practical way of operating
Data are introduced on: - the building - the wall or other element under investigation - the materials composing the wall - the damage found for wall or building element + per material - the area (or location) on the wall where the damage is present The system subdivides the data in: - properties descriptions Inspector is supported in making hypotheses, reaching a diagnosis and planning interventions
