General Information Environmental sciences and management is a modern, exciting, multi-disciplinary field, which includes subject areas as diverse as chemistry, biology, ecology, biochemistry, toxicology, earth sciences, law, sociology, economics and management. Each year the Department sponsors a number of students to participate in exchange studies outside Hong Kong.

Objectives To train and produce graduates who are suitably educated to pursue a developing career in one or more of the following areas: Chemistry environmental biology applied microbiology and biotechnology and to meet local and regional requirements in the industrial, commercial, government or education sectors.

Start your career here…. Upon graduation, you are expected to make a significant contribution to environmental conservation and protection in Hong Kong, both in the government and private sectors. You can seek employment in various government departments (e.g., Environmental Protection Department; Government Laboratory; Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department), consultancy companies, laboratories, the commercial, industrial, or educational sectors, or you can further pursue postgraduate studies.

Admissions Requirement To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following specific entrance requirements: (a) E in AL or AS Biology and Chemistry, one of which must be obtained in AL and (b) E in one of the following Mathematics subjects: HKCEE Mathematics; or AS Applied Mathematics, or Pure Mathematics, or Mathematics and Statistics; or AL Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics or C in GCSE Mathematics

Programme Structure University Requirements Programme Core Out of Discipline Language (e.g. University English Courses) + Required Courses (Courses that must be passed to complete a programme) + Any courses which are not related to the discipline of the programme award Chinese Civilization Course Programme Electives (Courses chosen from a defined set of courses) (Refer to Appendix I for details The programme is made up of three main components as follows:

What will you be studying? In Year 1, you will concentrate on learning the fundamentals that underpin environmental science –especially those related to biology and chemistry. In Years 2 and 3, your choice of courses enables you to study more detailed areas of environmental science and management. Some of the “required courses” include Environmental Sampling and Risk Assessment (where you will learn how scientists make measurements related to environmental matters, how they analyse their data, and how they predict outcomes); Environmental Pollution (the study of contaminants in our environment, and how they affect living organisms including humans); Environmental Law (how we legislate to maintain our environmental quality); Economics of the Environment (how environmental management is intimately linked to economic matters); and Earth Systems (how our planet's biogeochemistry “fits together”). Advanced elective courses are also available: Quality and Environmental Management; Environmental Policy and Ethics; Environmental Microbiology; Environmental Impact Assessment; Environmental Toxicology; Environmental Conservation and Resources Management; and Marine Biology.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and Management Programme, students should be able to: Describe the general biological and chemical principles appropriate to the study of environmental topics, including global environmental phenomena, environmental microbiology, ecology, toxicology and pollution. Competently perform a wide range of technical skills in environmental measurement and analysis, conservation and resource management, pollution control, waste treatment, impact assessment and quality management. Critically evaluate experiments in the Environmental Sciences as reported in the literature and communicate these evaluations effectively. Identify, comprehend and reflect upon the responsibility of environmental scientists in society, with particular emphasis on the protection of the living environment, and application of the principles of sustainable development and “green” production.

Requirements for graduation Following are the requirements for the award of degree: Must complete 98 credit units. (95 credit units for students exempted from the University English Courses.) Must fulfill University Requirements in Language Courses (see below) and 6 credit units of Chinese Civilisation Courses. Must take a minimum of 74 credit units from programme core. Must complete at least 9 credit units of Out-of-Discipline courses.
